150 million Indonesians live in quake/tsunami-prone areas: official | Bangkok Post: news

A damaged car is seen among debris after a tsunami, near Sumur, Banten province, Indonesia, on Wednesday. National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told a press conference that some 148.4 million Indonesians live in earthquake-prone areas, while 3.8 million are in tsunami-vulnerable ones. In explaining the failure, authorities explained that while Indonesia has an early warning system in place for quake-triggered tsunami, it lacks a similar system to warn of possible tsunami after a volcanic eruption. "It's not only buoys, other tsunami early warning equipment was vandalised or got stolen," Sutopo said. Search and rescue efforts Wednesday have been focusing on Sumur District located in the southern tip of Java, in Pandeglang Regency.
